Gertrude had each purpose to hate canines, and nobody would have blamed her. A couple months ago, the 2-year-old cat was attacked by a pack of canines in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, the place she had been living on the streets.

A local lady discovered Gertrude — it’s not clear if she witnessed the assault or discovered her afterwards. The lady rushed Gertrude to a veterinary clinic run by Compassion Without Borders (CWOB), a corporation that rescues street dogs in Mexico, to see if they could help her.
“She was actually badly injured, and she had a lot of open wounds
When the vet team went to operate on Gertrude, they discovered she was pregnant. Sadly, the team could not save Gertrude’s unborn infants — the canines had ripped into her stomach, inflicting a number of inner injury. However Gertrude herself survived, which was a miracle itself.
A few week later, while Gertrude was recovering from surgical procedure, a pet named Clementine arrived on the clinic.
Clementine had an equally unhappy, but totally different, story. She and her three littermates have been being kept as pets, however their owner dumped them on the clinic after they got sick and didn’t return for them.
“They came in in very poor situation, and they’d been away from their mother for perhaps a few week,” Camblor stated. “They were tiny — perhaps a few pound each. Everyone was very sick. The clinic workers did their greatest, however Clementine was the only pet who survived.”
When Claudia Ortega, the CWOB clinic supervisor, was walking past Gertrude’s cage with Clementine in her arms, Gertrude did one thing surprising.
“Gertrude would approach the entrance of the cage and begin chirping,” Camblor stated. “She would also kind of head butt and press towards the cage.”
Ortega set up a supervised meeting, and Gertrude and Clementine instantly hit it off.
“Gertrude began grooming her and purring and soliciting affection from Clementine,” Camblor stated. “And Clementine was simply so tiny that it was most likely good to have one other heat body to cuddle as much as and to be friends with.”
Each time Ortega tried to separate Gertrude and Clementine, Gertrude grew to become distressed, and cried till she was reunited with Clementine. So for the rest of their time at the clinic, Ortega kept Gertrude and Clementine in the same cage. A couple weeks later, Ortega moved the pair into foster care in her own house, and she continued to keep them together.
Gertrude happily took on a motherly position with Clementine, grooming her and cuddling her.
“They grew to become inseparable,” Camblor stated. “Little Clementine sleeps on prime of Gertrude. They’re always together.”
“Clementine benefits from it tremendously,” Camblor added. “Gertrude is a superb mom who retains her impeccably clean, grooms her and offers her warmth and love.”
Gertrude even tolerates Clementine’s playful puppy antics.
“Gertrude’s a saint,” Camblor stated. “Clementine’s a playful puppy, and she likes to roughhouse with Gertrude, and Gertrude puts up with it and plays again.”
Last week, Camblor transfer Gertrude and Clementine to California, the place they may discover endlessly homes in america. As she prepared for the journey, Camblor tried to place Gertrude and Clementine in separate carriers. “I believed it will be hard for a cat to travel that long in smaller carrier with a puppy,” Camblor stated.
However Gertrude cried and cried, so Camblor ended up keeping them together.
“I believe the entire thing is stunning,” Camblor. “Even when she [Gertrude] hadn’t been attacked by canines, I personally, in all my years of rescue, have not seen that form of interspecies connection before.”
Now that they are in California, the pair is in foster care — together, of course. And Camblor hopes they will always stay that manner.
“We are attempting to get them adopted out together, which we all know is a very special request,” Camblor stated. “However we’ll try to see if there’s anyone who’d be keen to open their home to each of these guys. We’re hoping the correct people will step forward who will be able to provide a cat and a puppy a home.”
